KING KANOUTE
Tuesday 10 February, 2004
Fredi Kanoute continues to enjoy his introduction to the African international scene, after firing Mali into the semi-finals of the African Nations Cup in Tunisia on Saturday (Feb 7).
On the same day that another former Upton Park striker, Jermain Defoe, was making a goalscoring debut for new club Tottenham Hotspur, Fredi hit an 45th minute equaliser against Titi Camara's Guinea, who had taken an early lead through Pascal Feindounou, before Mali skipper Mahamadou Diarra took advantage of a goalkeeping blunder to snatch a dramatic injury-time winner at the end of the game.
The 2-1 victory set up a semi-final clash against Morocco on Wednesday (Feb 11) and took Fredi to the top of the goalscoring charts in the tournament, alongside Cameroon's Patrick Mboma, on four goals.
With Rigobert Song's Cameroon side now out of the running following their quarter-final defeat to Nigeria, the Spurs hit-man is now highly fancied to finish as the ANC's leading marksman.
