EX HAMMERS RETRO FAIR IN ROMFORD
Tuesday 07 October, 2008
ALL roads lead to Romford town centre on the afternoon of Sunday, November 2, when EX magazine will present the first West Ham Fans' Retro Fair.
The event will be held at the RUSSC (short for Romford United Services Social Club), which is located on the corner junction of Mawney Road and St. Edwards Way main ring road.
Proceedings will kick-off at 12 noon and continue until 4pm, with plenty to interest Hammers¹ fans going on throughout the afternoon.
Look what's in store at this unmissable event...
PLAYER SIGNINGS Former West Ham players, spanning foru decades, will be in attendance for a book signing session between 1.00pm and 3.00pm.
Signing copies of our brand new 248-page book, West Ham: In My Day (Vol 2), priced only £12.00 and launching on this weekend, will be:
Popular ex-Hammers¹ favourite Frank McAvennie, who is flying down especially from the North-East to attend. Remember how this one-time Golden Boy's 28 goals fired us to within a whisker of the league championship in 1986?
Flying 70s right-winger Johnny Ayris and centre-back Alan Stephenson, who cost a club record £80,000 fee when he signed from Crystal Palace in 1968, are also featured in the book and will be joining Frank at our special book signing session.
Eddie Bovington, one of our FA Cup winners from 1964 and the engine room of Ron Greenwood¹s midfield in the mid-60s, completes the VIP quartet.
QUESTION-AND-ANSWER FORUM All four ex-Hammers will also take part in a lively Question-and-Answer debate conducted by the EX magazine editorial team. As well as getting the new In My Day book signed and having their photograph taken with the former Hammers who will be with us on the day, the Q&A will also give supporters the chance to put their questions to the ex-players.
THE PLACE TO BE The hall we've hired is ideal. It holds up to 500 people and we¹re expecting it to fill up quite quickly. It¹s well equipped with a proper stage, speakers and a microphone. And if you need to rest your legs, there are plenty of seats and tables available. Refreshments ¬ tea, coffee and sandwiches - will be available to purchase, while a fully licensed bar (within the main hall) will also be open throughout the event.
ONE-STOP CHRISTMAS SHOP
New Books Copies of In My Day (Vol 1) will also be on sale, along with Tony Mac¹s acclaimed hardback book, West Ham United: The Managers, which is now available for just £10.00 - half the original price.
Old Books Tony Hogg, the author of all three editions of the West Ham United Who's Who, will be selling an array of West Ham-related and general football books.
Programmes West Ham match day programmes old and new will be on sale, including some rarities.
Magazines For those of you who need to pick up any copies of EX that are missing from your collection, we¹ll have every available back edition on sale, along with our binders.
Trade Cards & Goodies EX's resident memorabilia expert Tim Crane will be there displaying the most extensive West Ham trade card collection in the world, along with other assorted Hammers-related goodies of interest.
Photographs Your chance to snap up evocative images from days gone by - we'll be selling black & white and colour pictures of past West Ham team groups and player portraits and action shots.
Quality Hammers Memorabilia Dave Alexander of Sport Remembered, who ran the successful recent memorabilia auction in Stevenage, will also be present, selling a range of framed and personally autographed items that will make ideal birthday or Christmas gifts. Dave possesses some of the most sought-after memorabilia in the existence.
Free Valuation Service Dave Alexander and Paul Webb, partners at Football Memorabilia Auctions, will also be happy to provide a free memorabilia valuation service. If you possess an item or a collection of any sort and would like to know its true value, then these guys will gladly confirm for you, there and then, what it's worth. Who knows, you may be sitting on a small fortune. Dave and Paul may also make you an offer you can't refuse!
SOCIAL OCCASION "For West Ham fans, it¹s a chance to get all your Christmas shopping done in one go, under the same roof," says Tony Mac.
"As well as all the various trade stands, it promises to be a great social occasion too. Everyone who helps to make EX possible, including Terry Roper, Terry Connelly and Tim Crane, will be there on the day and it's a great opportunity for people to meet like-minded Hammers enthusiasts.
ADMISSION ¬ ADULTS FOR A QUID! Admission to the completely self-contained West Ham Fans¹ Retro Hall will be a nominal £1.00 per person.
"We¹re not charging the stall holders a penny to be there, but the small admission cost will enable us to cover the ex-players¹ expenses and cost of hiring the hall," explained Tony.
"If this first event goes as well as we expect and hope it will, then we¹d like to think it will become an annual occasion."
DIRECTIONS Situated just next to the main Romford ring road, the RUSSC club is very easy to find and reach by public transport. And for those intending to drive, although the social club's small car park is for club members only, there are no parking restrictions in nearby streets on a Sunday, so finding somewhere to park shouldn't be a problem.
By car: The RUSSC is actually situated at the town centre end of Mawney Road, which runs between St Edwards Way and the A127 Eastern Avenue. For those with Sat-Nav, head for the post code RM7 7HB. Or click on this link for a map.
By public transport: The RUSSC is within easy walking distance of Romford main line station ¬ a brisk stroll of no more than 10 minutes. There are plenty of bus stops just around the corner from this easily accessible venue.
